Exploding hybrid cars

PrintE-mail

The Loch Ness monster is on
the loose! No, the aliens have abducted half of New York City and have
replaced them with puppets they control! The President is actually a
Martian! The whole Chinese and Asian population is actually an alien
race that stranded on our planet centuries ago! Sasquatch and Bigfoot
open a theme park! If you live in the United States, then you have seen
these and even more ridiculous titles on several cheap publications,
commonly referred
to as tabloids. Besides the new story on Brangelina or how much weight
a certain celebrity has gained in the last few weeks, you may also see
a headline, which was even once broadcast by the media and information
superstar CNN: Hybrid car exploded, a Doctor injured!
If you ever asked yourself how an Urban Legend gets created, then here
you have the perfect example. Usually there is a completely genuine
story, which gets either blown out of proportion, is misplaced or
misinterpreted and hits the newscast machinery without proper
confirmation, just for the sake of having brought it first. Alligators
in the sewers of New York is actually a common occurrence in Florida,
several cities and communities near the Everglades have such problems
where alligators get lost in a sewer and a crew needs to remove the
oversized lizard from the gutter.
What happened with the exploding hybrid car? First of all, any car can
explode if it is full of gasoline and someone drops a incendiary device
into the tank. Furthermore, sometimes when cars are driven at high
speeds and the vehicle gets out of control and crashes against a hard
surface, it is possible that the car goes up in flames. On the other
hand, if someone has a grudge against you and either pays a
professional or knows how to build a car bomb, then it may happen that
the lunatic just puts one of those into your car and your car explodes.
This does not have to do much with your car being a hybrid, it has much
more to do with your character and the way how you treat people,
unfortunately making a mistake to treat the wrong guy as dirt. The
interesting thing here is how the press and media jumped to
conclusions, when something like this happened, blaming new technology
for the blast, until the FBI discovered that it was actually a bomb.
Unfortunately, many other attention seeking people now are trying to
give this new urban legend fresh wind by claiming that their own hybrid
vehicle blew up as well. Funny that many more reports about such blow
ups have been recorded than actual hybrid cars were sold.
