How do hybrid cars help the environment

PrintE-mail

The
current climate change has prompted many attempts to resolve the causes
and reasons for the apparent global warming. The Climate Change 2007
report, also known as the Fourth Assessment Report of the United
Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has prompted the
governments of the World to employ measures which are deemed to
counteract the demise of the breathable air and limit or eradicate the
sources that produce so called greenhouse gasses. Many such gasses have
been traced back to motor vehicle emissions, like hydrocarbon gasses
containing methane, carbon dioxide, but also carbon monoxide, nitrogen
oxides, precursors to smog and acid rain, sulphur oxide and other
particulates. Environmental protection agencies have imposed stricter
regulations on car manufacturers, who in turn figured out a feasible
way to reduce emission to the new standards.
The solution provided by the automotive industries are not electric
cars, magnet propelled cars, cars that run on water steam, cars
propelled by solar energy or wind energy, but rather more of the same
combustion engine, with a little bit electric car gadgetry thrown in,
just enough to meet the imposed limitations. While the reluctance to go
all the way towards new and environment friendly solutions may have
some base, where the majority of customers may not embrace the new
technology as readily as the digital revolution; the actual reason lies
elsewhere: the fear of the car manufacturers from the huge petrol and
gasoline producing companies. This unholy alliance was forged ever
since the industrial revolution and the cheap combustion engine cars
conquered the market in the early twentieth century and lasts up until
this very day. Any and all inventions and incentives to produce
vehicles that would eliminate the use of gasoline were squashed even
before the patent ink was dry. Most of the patents were bought, price
was not questioned, by the big oil companies themselves, the patents
kept under lock and seal. General Motors was pressed into killing their
own electric car in the nineties, suffocating a great idea from the
very beginning.
To say that hybrid cars help the environment is ludicrous. What hybrid
cars actually do is, they produce less damaging exhaust fumes, thereby
just prolonging the agony. If the World were a horse, it would have
been shot by now. Nevertheless, we are all stuck with what we have got
and all we can do is hope that someday there will be enough readiness
in the world, where people will finally disallow the use of combustion
engines or emissions of any kind, which finally will force the
companies to succumb and provide us with a truly environmentally
friendly vehicle. Until then, drive hybrid cars, there is nothing else.
